FactSage is a fully integrated database computing system in chemical thermodynamics and consists of a variety of information, database, calculation and manipulation modules that access various pure substances and solution databases. It is installed at hundreds of industrial, governmental and academic sites around the world.

FactSage is employed in materials science, pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, electrometallurgy, corrosion, glass technology, combustion, ceramics, geology, etc. It is used internationally in graduate and undergraduate teaching and research. The FactSage Education 8.3 Package – FactSageEdu presented here is the Free FactSage 8.3 Demonstration Version.

It is a demonstration package for those interested in finding out more about FactSage 8.3. It is ideally suited for teaching thermochemistry in universities.

FactSage Education 8.3 has been released. It replaces FactSage Education 8.2 (July 2022).

In order to update FactSage Education 8.2 to FactSage Education 8.3 you must download and install the FactSage Education 8.3 Package.

Security and privacy

In order to download FactSage Education Package – FactSageEdu you must send us your email address. Download instructions are then sent to this email address. The email address is not used for any other activity. The downloaded package (CD-FactSageEdu*.exe) is identical to all users – for example, after downloading CD-FactSageEdu*.exe you may copy it and share it with your colleagues.

After installing FactSageEdu, when you run FactSage the program accesses www.factsage.com in order to validate the package i.e. it checks it is running the latest FactSageEdu version and there are no warning messages from www.factsage.com. This is a one time operation – one or more text files are downloaded to c:\FactSageEdu. Depending on your settings, it may be necessary for you to give the program permission to download the files.

Note – no information about you are your computer is gathered. If you wish you can then disconnect your computer from the internet (i.e. airplane mode) and FactSage will continue running for up to 8 hours or more as long as you do not quit the FactSageEdu Main Menu Window.

FactSage Edu – Summary

FactSage Education 8.3 (FactSageEdu) is a free version of FactSage 8.3 with some restrictions on the FactSage 8.3 Apps and FACT Databases. Complete details on FactSage 8.3 are given at www.FactSage.com

The FactSage Education 8.3 Package of software, databases and documentation contains over 19,000 files and runs under Windows.
Minimum System Requirements: Equivalent to the minimum system requirements for running Microsoft Windows 10 operating system.
Recommended System Requirements: Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 or above; CPU: Intel Core i7 2.8 GHz (or an equivalent AMD processor) or better: RAM: 16 GB or more: Storage: 7200 RPM or better HDD or SSD

After downloading the FactSage Education 8.3 Package you must install the program in the folder c:\FactSageEdu of your personal computer (PC). It is NOT permitted to install the package in any other folder (e.g. “Program Files”, etc.) or on the network server.

The program must have access to the Internet. When you first run FactSage the program accesses www.factsage.com in order to validate the package. This validation process is a one-time operation and when finished you may disconnect from the Internet (i.e. airplane mode).

FactSageEdu – Restrictions

FactSageEdu gives you free access to most of the FactSage 8.3 Apps and FACT (FT) databases but with certain restrictions as follows.

    • With the ‘Calculate Apps’ – Reaction, EpH, Predom, Equilib, Phase Diagram – you can only enter up to 3 elements.
    • Equilib and Phase Diagram can not be run simultaneously.
    • Importing ChemSage files (*.dat, *.cst) is not permitted.
    • Importing TDB files or translating TDB files into FactSage format is not permitted
    • There is no access to the following Apps due to restrictions on the elements: OptiSage, CalphadOPtimizer, Results, Viscosity.
    • There is no access to Macro Processing.
    • There is no access to ChemApp for Python.
    • There is no access to the FactSage Add-ons Menu.
    • There is no server or client option – the package must be installed as a single user standalone installation in the folder c:\FactSageEdu.
    • Your computer must be connected to the Internet. If the program can NOT access www.factsage.com then you can NOT run FactSageEdu.
    • When you run FactSageEdu the program accesses www.factsage.com in order to validate the package. One or more text files are downloaded to c:\FactSageEdu. Depending on your settings, it may be necessary for you to give the program permission to download the files.

Note: there are no uploads – that is, no files are copied from your computer.

FactSageEdu expires at the end of June 2024. This expiration date (2024-06-30) may be revised.

 

How to install FactSage Education 8.3 on your computer

1. Download FactSage Education Package

Click Submit one time only and wait for the message:

We will then email you details on how to download the file CD-FactSageEdu83.exe. If you do not receive an email from us it means you have entered an invalid email address or your mail server is blocking the email.

After downloading CD-FactSageEdu83.exe you are ready to extract the setup files.

2. Extract the setup files

CD-FactSageEdu83.exe is a self-extractor that creates the setup files for the FactSage installation.

Make sure you are running CD-FactSageEdu83.exe that was downloaded above (1. Download FactSage Education 8.3 Package).

Run CD-FactSageEdu83.exe and enter the name of a temporary destination folder where the extracted files are to be stored. For example C:\Temp – do NOT extract into C:\FactSage, C:\FactSageEdu or C:\FactSage83, etc. If the temporary folder does not exist it will be created automatically.

Press Install to start the extraction.

This will create the following folder and files

\CD-FactSageEdu83\…
Setup-FactSage.exe, ShowMe.htm, ReadMe.htm, Config.dat, Configs.dll, Configs.txt … etc.

and the sub-folders

\CD-FactSageEdu83\Images\ …
\CD-FactSageEdu83\FactMore\ …

The size of the files may be different from those listed in the screenshot.

3. Install FactSage Education 8.3

Run Setup-FactSageEdu.exe to start the FactSage Education 8.3 Setup Wizard.

Click on ‘Next’ and use the default settings. This will install FactSage Education 8.3 in the folder c:\FactSageEdu and update the previous version if it exists.

When finished click on the FactSage Education icon (or open c:\FactSageEdu\FactSage.exe) to run FactSage Education 8.3.

 

Running FactSageEdu

Click the FactSage Education icon displayed on the screen or alternately open FactSage.exe located in the folder c:\FactSageEdu
– c:\FactSageEdu\FactSage.exe

Your computer must be connected to the Internet.

When you first run FactSage the program accesses www.factsage.com in order to validate the package. This validation process is repeated periodically.

FactSage Education 8.3 expires at the end of June 2024. This expiration date (2024-06-30) may be revised.
