What's New in FactSage 8.0
The FactSage Apps and Databases are essentially working as designed but some issues have been reported.
Note: this only applies to FactSageEdu 8.0 - the free FactSage education package. To avoid this error message and extend the expiration date to June 30th - 2021-06-30:
The next version, FactSageEdu 8.1, will be released prior to this expiration date (2021-06-30).
Note: this bug only applies to that very small group of users who perform back diffusion calculations. There is no need for concern if you do not perform these calculations.Calculations with Equilib involving back diffusion during Scheil-Gulliver cooling have been in error. (Examples of cooling calculations are presented in the slide show Equilib - Advanced features - Section 13).
To fix the bug you can download a patch FactSage80_2020-11-11.zip (approx. size 3.4 MB) and copy FactSage.dll to your FactSage 8.0 installation.
Note: this error only applies calculations made by FactSageEdu 8.0 - the free FactSage education package.
3-element oxide systems with multiple oxidation states, such as Cr-Mn-O, are incorrectly calculated by the Equilib and Phase Diagram modules if solid solution phases from FToxid are selected. This bug only occurs in FactSageEdu, not in FactSage.
It will be corrected in the next release, FactSageEdu 8.1.
Note: this updated package mainly applies to those users who run Viscosity. There is no need to update your FactSage 8.0 installation if you do not perform viscosity calculations.
The FactSage 8.0 package has been updated. All the issues listed below have been resolved including the Viscosity error and an improved FactOptimal when including viscosity calculations.
To update your current FactSage 8.0 installation, download CD-FactSage80.exe (approx. size 370 MB),
run Setup-FactSage80.exe and simply select option Update existing FactSage installation.
Note, you can run FactSage 8.0 to download the package - in the FactSage 8.0 Main Menu Window click
'Tools > FactSage Updates > 3. Download the complete FactSage 8.0 Update/Installation Package'.
After updating the FactSage 8.0 installation you will see the message 'FactSage update 2020-10-01' posted at the bottom left of the main menu window (above 'c 1976 - 2020').
Note: this issue has now been resolved and the installation package (CD-FactSage80.exe) has been updated - see Updated FactSage 8.0 package - 'FactSage update 2020-10-01' above. In the Viscosity App when you switch between the Melts and Glasses database the calculated viscosity may be in error.
We are checking it out and will report ASAP.
We have received reports that some of the files may contain a virus, etc.
Periodically Microsoft Defender and associated anti-virus software developers suddenly decide that one of the FactSage files (e.g. FactSage.exe, FS-Copy.exe, etc.) has become threat. The file was OK last week, but today it is a threat. We have not changed anything but anti-virus developers are constantly revising their detection criteria and they must err on the side of caution.
We will contact Microsoft and resolve the issue ASAP.
The following is the response from Microsoft - September 24, 2020.
Microsoft Analyst comments: The file is not malware and we cannot reproduce any detection on the file.
The regular Microsoft Windows Update will refresh the antimalware solution detection files (i.e. no longer consider FactSage a threat) but this may take time. For information on how to trigger an update visit Microsoft Defender Antivirus.
If FactSage.exe is missing you can download a small patch FactSage80_2020-06-29.zip (approx. size 365 KB) and copy FactSage.exe to your FactSage 8.0 installation. Alternatively you can run Setup-FactSage80.exe and simply select option Update existing FactSage installation
Note: these issues have now been resolved and the installation package (CD-FactSage80.exe) has been updated. To update your current FactSage 8.0 installation, download CD-FactSage80.exe (approx. size 370 MB), run Setup-FactSage80.exe and simply select option Update existing FactSage installation. If you do not want to download CD-FactSage80.exe but want to check out the updated slide shows, Equilib - Regular Features and The theoretical background of FactSage, these files (*.pdf) may be downloaded from www.factsage.com
PHASE DIAGRAMS & DOCUMENTATION DOWNLOAD (located on the right-hand-side of the screen).
The following issues are minor and only affect a few users.
Viscosity - in the Viscosity App the option to run FactOptimal does not work.
Slide Shows - the Equilib - Regular Features and The theoretical background of FactSage slide shows were updated for FactSage 8.0 but the updates were not included in the installation package.
Phase Diagram - labels of isothermal lines in polythermal projection are missing (option label iso-therm in the Manipulate and Refresh Window). This error only occurs if the regional setting for numerical floating point numbers is a comma (ex: 1,23) and not a period (ex: 1.23).
Phase Diagram - the colors are inverted on the temperature scale (thermometer) on the right hand side of a polythermal projection (option T-bar in the Manipulate and Refresh Window). For example, red should be 'hot' at the top of the scale but it appears in the 'cold' zone at the bottom.
FactSage client installations will crash if CD-FactSage80.exe was downloaded prior to June 30, 2020. A user may resolve the issue by simply downloading again CD-FactSage80.exe and refreshing the server installation.
